Is Fencing Safe?

By Rebekah Vande Velde

In spite of its appearance as a dangerous sport, fencing is very safe. Precautions are taken in every aspect of the sport, from the clothing we wear, to the weapons we use and the rules we abide by.

A fencer’s uniform is made of puncture-resistant fabric. The fabrics in our uniforms are made to withstand concentrated force, such as you might find on the end of a foil.

Masks are also made to very high standards. While it may appear that masks are flimsy because of the mesh front, this is not the case. Masks have heavy-duty mesh that is specially constructed to prevent breaking.

And although fencing foils are referred to as “swords” or “weapons”, they are not sharp. Every practice foil has a blunted tip and a rubber button that covers the tip. The sides of the blades have no cutting edge and the blade itself is designed to bend rather than break.

Fencing equipment suppliers have kept up with the times and are constantly innovating their products to ensure more safety and comfort. Technology has come a long way recently, and has been put to our advantage as fencers. This is why antique, vintage or “old” equipment is not allowed at HOT Fencing. In order to provide a safe experience for everyone, we all need to be using equipment that is up-to-date and as safe as we know how to make it.

Another way fencing keeps its participants safe is through the rules that are used. Just like you couldn’t walk into a karate club and start kicking people, you can’t grab a foil and start stabbing at people. Fencing is more than swordfighting. It is a precise sport that requires self-control and intellect. In fencing bouts there is no bodily contact between the opponents. Penalties are given for bodily contact and other unsafe behaviors.

At HOT Fencing, we will have our own set of rules in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable time for everyone. We will take every precaution to make sure people are staying alert and safe.

At the same time, accidents can happen. For this reason, HOT Fencing carries insurance and also requires all students to have memberships within the USFA (United States Fencing Association) for personal insurance. The USFA offers both individual and family memberships, and we can help you decide what is best suited to your needs and help you fill out a form.

Fencing is a safe sport that all ages can enjoy. We hope you will join us!
